Samuel Malawsky was a pupil and an admirer of Josseleh. This can be felt both in his repertoire which consists of many of Josseleh’s pieces known or unknown before, modified or unmodified by Malawsky.

There are some recordings with Josseleh where he sings duets with Malawsky and you can clearly notice how Malawsky is mimicking Josseleh’s unique way of singing.

From Josseleh he also took the great fervor and heart moving way of singing.

He was more of a showman than Josseleh. Malawsky sang nearly exclusively in theaters transformed in Synagogues for the High Holidays and was adding a real show to the prayers together with his famous family choir consisting of his children. On the midnight Slichos service, he used to dim the kight on the stage and had a background looking like a street from the old shteitel and he used to knock on the doors and call the imaginary people to the prayer as was the custom in old times !

Nearly in all of his recordings, he sings with his family. Nearly every piece includes some folkloric melodies sung by his children, with him coming in with the “Chazonus” (the cantorial part).

Malawsky was a sweet singer who sang with great warmth and conviction. His coloratura was beautiful and his voice very moving.

One of the most beautiful renderings in his repertoire is the “Beein Meilitz Yoysher” composed by Alter Yechiel Karniol and arranged by Malawsky.

His daughter Goldeleh, use to sing many solo’s.
