Moisheleh as he is called affectionately, is a man of good tastes in everything he is dealing with, be it clothing or any other worldly matter.
And so he has an exquisite taste in Chazonus, meaning, that when one is listening to any piece Moisheleh chooses to sing, one has the feeling that this is the most tasteful and right interpretation. Usually Moisheleh's interpretation, becomes a standard. Like with the "Tisgadal" of Leibeleh Glantz or the "Yismechu" by Yaakov Talmud and many other songs. One just feels that "that's it" !
Moisheleh is perhaps the greatest interpretor of Yiddish songs I have ever heard live or on recordings. When Moisheleh sings a Yiddish songs, you go back to the shteitel be it "Kotzk" or "Belz".
Moisheleh has other unique characteristic in singing. No one is a greater master in dominating time and tempo. When you hear him sing a rhythmic passage, you feel like he is giving a new meaning to rythm by the exactness and beauty of his interpretation. Other great singers are carried by the rythm, Moyshele however is ruling over the rythm.
Moisheleh's diction and Grammatical correctness are second to none.
When Moisheleh is singing or praying, one is spell bound all the time and not one second is ones attention distracted.
People in Antwerp remember with awe, when Moisheleh was engaged as the Chief Chazan of Antwerp's Great Synagogue when he came back from the concentration camps after the war, how he sang during the "Slichos" service the prayer of "Eich Niftach Peh"
The congregation was moved so deeply by his rendering that until today this is the main topic they talk about when remembering Moisheleh Kraus. |
