Josseleh Rosenblatt is considered by many as the “King of Chazonim” .

His greatness was due not only to the fact that he possessed the most beautiful and melodious voice and because of the way he rendered songs and prayers.

Josseleh as he is called affectionately by the people, shone in every aspect of interpretation. His voice rang fully in every register. He sang in the upper range like a dramatic tenor and in the lower range like a bass / baritone. His falsetto was second to none. Josseleh’s coloratura was rolling out of his mouth like pearls. He could express warmth and hearthiness in the highest degree as well as joy or sadness.

But the most amazing aspect of his many sided talent was: Josseleh the composer. The music he created can be described as nothing less than “Heavenly Music”.

Josseleh took inspiration from the words he was setting the music to. Then, from his soul, the most amazing and original music pored out with modulations from one scale to the other and from one form of rythmic value to another which would not have made him ashamed next to Puccini or Verdi or any other classic composer.

Maybe his great gifts to cause so much joy to so many people even today after over 60 years since he passed away through the recordings available, are due to his extraordinary personality.

I knew very well his son the late Henri Rosenblatt as well as his son Ralph Rosenblatt. They told me about his generosity which knew no bounds.

In Josseleh’s biography written by his late son Samuel Rosenblatt, he relates many of the unbelievable ways he use to give to charity and how he was tricked many times and gave for unworthy causes.
